1/3 - Geology

Today we is Geology 101. For the geologists it’s basic stuff, but for a stupid consultant like me this is all new, although I do have some knowledge of the subject. We learn about strata, plates, basins, deposits, anticlines, reservoirs and traps. It’s very interesting but about halfway through the afternoon, we’re all spent.
At the end of class, we are introduced to Pedro. Pedro is originally from Portugal, but he’s lived here for years and he knows the Miri field very well. He tells us about the excursion to the field he will leads us on the next morning. He’s a very friendly guy, and the way tells us about HSE on the trip, him making sure the bus is safe before we get on it, is somehow quite endearing.

After the course, I go check out the gym. It’s not very interesting, and when Frank shows up, we move to the sauna, where Ben, one of the American guys is already enjoying the heat. It’s quite a good experience to do the sauna and clean those pores from the sunscreen, mosquito repellent, sweat and dirt that’s been accumulating the last two weeks. After that we take a steam bath, which is VERY hot, and then it’s on to the tiny pool. We have a chat with Ru, who gives us some pointers on food places and things to do in Miri’s old town. The rest of the evening is rather quiet; we have some dinner with about 8 people, after which we grab an ice cream. The rest of the evening I do some writing and generally hanging about. I’m still tired through the day, and I try to get as much sleep as possible.
