2/3 - Excursion to the Miri Field

Today Pedro takes us on a trip to the Miri Field. Actually, Miri Field is for the greater part offshore, but the initial petroleum production took place from the 1910s on on the hills overlooking the then tiny fishing town. Canada Hill and Shell Hill we’re the first locations explored, and some 80 million barrels were produced before the field was abandoned in the 1970s. Production offshore still continues.

Pedro shows us around the various geological vistas which tells geologists so much about the characteristics of a field. Miri Field is especially appropriate for this because the layers of rock which make up the hills are exposed in various areas, allowing us to see what is usually invisible to the naked eye. The trip is very useful because it illustrates a lot the things we learned during the past few days, making it very tangible. It’s also fun to go out again with the whole group.

The afternoon session is mostly dedicated to doing exercises, translating geological data to maps. It’s not hard, but it is necessary to learn this stuff, because we need to apply it soon in our project tasks.

At 4:30pm the exodus starts! Weekend is here and for some people this means a trip to Kuala Lumpur, for others it’s off to the Marriot and for most of the locals it’s simply time to go home. I’m going to the Marriot to relax a little and see Miri, as are the French, the Americans, the Englishman and the German. A very mixed but also very Western oriented group.

As we arrive at the Marriot, I’m slightly disappointed. This place it supposed to be the cat’s meeow, but apart from the pool, which is huge, it’s not better in any way than the Grand Palace. On the contrary, no free internet! Still, that pool… wonderful.

After checking in and doing some swimming I meet Tan in the lobby, he’s taking me and Frank for dinner and then some shopping in the local malls. The rest rather stays at the hotel to be pampered. They love it there. I prefer a nice restaurant over the expensive hotel food. We eat dinner at a rather western place, fries and mixed grill.
